This course is one of seven core modules in the Road Safety Champion Program. It provides an overview of safety trends and the national safety vision. Participants will learn about the importance of prioritizing safety in their communities and the techniques for effective safety collaboration. Understanding these fundamentals is crucial for anyone looking to become a Road Safety Champion.
Intended Audience
This course is ideal for beginners and those seeking foundational knowledge in road safety. It is also suitable for participants from the Tribal Technical Assistance Program (TTAP), Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP), local-level municipalities, and city hall personnel. Additionally, students or staff in transportation, public health, and first responder agencies who are interested in roadway safety but may not have formal training in this area will find this course beneficial.
Course Presenter:
Ollie Wiesner, Civil Engineer

Ollie Wiesner is a staff member at the Northwest Tribal Technical Assistance Program (NW TTAP) Center and a graduate student in the Transportation Engineering program at the University of Washington. He was awarded the Pacific Northwest Transportation Consortium (PacTrans) Graduate Fellowship to support his studies. Wiesner is also a member of UW's Smart Transportation Applications and Research (STAR) Lab and works for the City of Seattle.
Wiesner has experience in Traffic Safety Engineering, having worked as a consultant focusing on local, county, and state crash data analysis. He is dedicated, hardworking, and passionate about using data for informed decision-making to address systematic issues in transportation, sustainability, and infrastructure vulnerability. Wiesner aims to contribute to the future shift towards clean transportation, improve supply chain efficiency, and tackle emerging issues from climate change, such as emission monitoring, emission reduction, and disaster preparedness.
