This course is one of seven core modules in the Road Safety Champion Program. It provides an introduction to the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), which sets the standards for traffic signs, road surface markings, and signals. Understanding these standards is crucial for ensuring uniformity and safety across different locations. This module is essential for anyone involved in road design and maintenance.
Intended Audience
This course is ideal for beginners and those seeking foundational knowledge in road safety. It is also suitable for participants from the Tribal Technical Assistance Program (TTAP), Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP), local-level municipalities, and city hall personnel. Additionally, students or staff in transportation, public health, and first responder agencies who are interested in roadway safety but may not have formal training in this area will find this course beneficial.
Course Presenter:
Dave McCormick, PE

Dave McCormick has been practicing Transportation Engineering for over 40 years. He retired from WSDOT in 2021 as the Assistant Regional Administrator in the Northwest Region. He was the Region Traffic Engineer in this busy Region including the Seattle Metropolitan Area and the 5 Northwest Washington Counties stretching from Seattle to the Canadian Border.
Besides being a Region Traffic Engineer for Washington State, he has been an Engineering Consultant and a City Traffic Engineer. He worked on several National and State Research Projects related to Traffic Engineering and Roadway Design and Maintenance. Dave is a past president of the Washington State Section of ITE. He started his career in 1983 as a sign designer for WSDOT and immediately became intimately familiar with the application of the MUTCD and the use of traffic control devices to improve Safety and Operations.
